About Doug


  • Born and raised "up the island" in Northport, graduated Northport High School in 1993.
  • Graduated Princeton University with an A.B. History and Certificate in American Studies in 1997.
  • Graduated with an Ed.M and Teaching Credential from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education in 1999.
  • Much more important than his degree, Doug met his wife, Mary Roberts (nee Thomas) at Harvard. 
  • After grad school, spent several years living in San Francisco, where he transitioned from teaching to a career as an entrepreneur in educational technology.
  • Came "home" to live in Brooklyn in 2004, continued career in ed tech in a business development role at Wireless Generation, which went on to become one of the most successful startups in education.
  • Moved to Greenport from Brooklyn in 2007 because he and Mary wanted to live in a small walking village by the water, and Greenport reminded them of the Long Island Doug's parents found when they looked to settled down after college.
  • Mary and Doug married in 2008 on Shelter Island.  Mary hails from Steeler country in Western PA but has fully adopted the North Fork as her home.  She teaches middle school self-contained special education at Mattituck Junior/Senior High.
  • In 2009, Doug founded Educational Solutions Consulting, which he runs from a home office in his home in Greenport.  ESC helps entrepreneurs in ed tech build partnerships with school districts around the country. Doug's clients are providing new solutions to old problems, and his work takes him across LI, NY State, and the country consulting with school agency leaders.  Doug's career is largely spent helping government agencies navigate purchasing and partnership issues, which will serve him well on the Village Board.  He's also tenacious in pursuit of grant and funding opportunities on behalf of his clients, and will do the same on behalf of Greenport.
  • First child, Sarah Kelsey Roberts, born January, 2014. Doug is running for Trustee in part to ensure that Sarah grows up in the best place on earth to live. 
  • Turning 40 a couple of weeks after the election.
  • Doug's hobbies include playing guitar and singing for Sarah Kelsey, sailing, kayaking, hiking, skiing, and reading on beaches.
  • Doug is a director on the board of The Princeton Nassoons Alumni Association, his college a Cappella group.
  • Doug is an alumni volunteer interviewer for North Fork applicants to Princeton each winter.
  • Doug is a rabid Yankee, Giant, and Ranger fan, and has happily married into the Steelers and Pirates (though not the Penguins!).
  • Doug can be seen working out at CrossFit North Tribe many weekday mornings, too often followed by a visit to Freddy at Sterlington Deli.
  • Recently, Doug has organized community efforts to provide local youth with alternatives to gangs, facilitating meetings of community members with members of The Guardian Angels.
